Today I got my copy of D23, the new quarterly magazine for Disney Fans. I was so excited for the Alice sneaky peak I heard about... however it was a total tease. A nice little article, it focused more on Burton's career than the upcoming Alice in Wonderland movie. And the concept art that had been dangled in front of my nose was slightly disappointing.
Only one photo really gave any kind of imagery to the finished piece and lucky for us- it has some embroidery!
I can see the embroidery of a rabbit and a deer, both animals which make an appearance in the original book. I wonder if they're employing any kind of conceptual freedom regarding the characters in the Wonderland/New world being in Alice's real/original world first. I wish I could tell what that necklace was.
I found this great set of photos at the Ft. Greene Flea Market today! I am so enthralled with them. Only I have no idea what date they're from. Anyone any idea?
UPDATE: I showed these pics to my costume supervisor and some other talented young ladies and they suspect these photos of western girls in Kimono are from the very late 1880s. Major clues: the bangs popular at that time period, as well as the corseted figures underneath. They see a very high bust line which is in keeping of the corset popular at the time. Thanks ladies!
So I'm on the hunt for more of Burton's Alice info.... and at the same time I've just been informed that an exclusive peek was given to Disney shareholders of the Mad Hatter. I'm super excited because I think I know where to get some info... more about that later. But until then I just found these costume sketches amongst my own library that I totally forgot I had.
Imagineer's costume concept for the original Tomorrowland's CircleVision attraction...
Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter: Apparently this is an early costume test.
Now, all reason would say that Colleen is the costume designer on this, given their long history of collaboration, but there's still no official word. And while this looks alot like Colleen... something is still off about it to label it hers. But then, that's why it's just a test. What does anyone think about this look? Anyone hear official word?
