I like picking up words. I keep a little pink notebook in my bag all the time to write down words & definitions I don't know. I find it's a very useful tool - much more conducive to learning than, say, a word-o-the-day email where there's no reason to retain the information. Today I was at the met and found three words I really don't think I've ever seen before:
ODALISQUE:
1. A female slave or concubine in a harem
2. A conventionalized painting of a reclining odalisque
Roger Fenton "Reclining Odalisque" 1858 (I saw this image at the Met today in a beautiful photographic exhibit which inspired the inquiry.)
SYLVAN:
1. One who lives in the woods
2. Of or characteristics of the woods or forrest
3. Living or found in the woods
4. Wooded
All paintings are background paintings for Sleeping Beauty by Eyvind Earle. A couple of these were nabbed off the Animation Backgrounds site by Rob Richards who works beautifully at restoring these backgrounds to their fullest potential.
HIRSUTE:
1. Hairy, shaggy, bristly
2. Having a large amount of hair
3. Describes a plant or plant part covered with long stiff hairs
